Celebrate family fitness this fall at the inaugural Utah Marathon and Fittest State Festival, Oct. 11-13. While the Utah Marathon, on Saturday, Oct. 13, is sure to bring many serious athletes to its starting line, the Fittest State Festival encourages the inner athlete in everyone to get moving towards a healthier lifestyle. To entice families to ditch the couch and get outside to play, the Utah Marathon, in partnership with Winder Farms, has designed the Family Fit Plan, an affordable way to participate in the recreational events taking place on Oct. 13.
Participation in the Family Fit Plan is simple. When one family member registers for an event on Oct. 13 (listed below), each additional family member of the same household, can participate in an equal-or-lower priced event for only $10, subsidized by Winder Farms. The family with the most participants will win a full Thanksgiving dinner, donated in kind by Winder Farms. To help families reap the benefits of the Family Fit Plan and their quest for a healthier lifestyle long after the festival ends, Winder Farms will also extend a discount on farm-fresh, organic and affordable food (delivered to your door, of course) to all participants who sign up as Winder Farm customers.
But attending the Utah Marathon and Fittest State Festival isn’t just about affordable, nutritious eating and healthy exercise: it’s also a great way for parents to instill positive lifestyle choices upon their children for years to come. “Utah is the fourth-fittest state in the nation, but we want to be number-one,” said Scott Kerr, CEO of the Utah Marathon and Fittest State Festival. “To reach that goal, we’ve created the Family Fit Plan, which encourages kids and parents to get off the couch, turn off the TV and explore Utah’s world-famous outdoors together. Moving around not only has immediate wellness benefits – it also sets the stage for kids in establishing a lifetime of healthy habits at an early age.”
Festival Agenda:
The festival kicks off on Thursday, Oct. 11 with the Fittest State Festival Expo at the newly renovated Salt Lake City Sheraton & Convention Center, where participants can pick up their race packets, and the general public can find inspiration while browsing hundreds of exhibitors that are excited to share the latest products and information on sports nutrition, equipment, apparel, medicine and massage. The expo runs from 4 to 8 p.m., then continues Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a pasta party to follow (time TBD). Registration and packet pick-up will be open until 7:59 p.m. Friday.
The real fun begins on Saturday, Oct. 13, when thousands of runners and cyclists of all abilities will take their mark at Salt Lake’s Library Square. Participants can take part in one of five events: the full 26.2-mile marathon, which winds from Library Square to Olympus Hills Park and back; a 13.1-mile half marathon; a 5k “Crazy Legs” run/walk; or a 25-mile bike tour along the marathon route. There’s also a one-kilometer “Kids K,” designed especially for children, and live entertainment and festivities will take place at the “Fit Stock” Finish Line Festival in Library Square throughout the day. The schedule of Saturday’s events is as follows:
· 6:30 a.m., Bike tour begins
· 6:40 a.m., Wheelchair and handcycle (half-marathon only) begins
· 7:00 a.m., Marathon and half-marathon begin
