MGMT Performs at Final Twilight Concert of 2013

MGMT, which stands for Management, is a psychedelic rock band born on the campus of Wesleyan University by two arts students, Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden, who lived down the hall from each other in the same dorm their freshman year.
Goldwasser said they had no intention of starting a band and were just hanging out creating music, but after writing three or four they realized they had something bigger than jam session.

They released various demo albums under the name The Management, but later changed it to MGMT when they found out another band was already using that name. Their first EP, Time to Pretend, was self-released in 2005 as solely a recording project, and their initial shows were more spectacles than concerts. So the band members were in disbelief in 2006 when they received a call from Columbia Records saying they were interested in signing them to their label...so shocked they thought the call was a joke.

Once they realized Columbia was for real, MGMT signed to their label and began producing their debut album, Oracular Spectacular. The album was a medley of different genres and styles, and its unique sound appealed to listeners across the globe. It reached #60 on the U.S. Billboard charts, but achieved even greater success in the overseas market. MGMT's growing fame was fueled by their 2007 selection by Spin.com as "Artist of the Day," followed by Rolling Stone naming them as one of ten "Artists to Watch" in November of that year.

MGMT went on to release their second album, Congratulations, in 2010, calling it a more accurate portrayal of who they are as a group and more representative of their true sound. Their latest album, simply called MGMT, is set to be released on September 17, 2013.

Hopefully we'll get to hear new selections from this album at their Twilight Concert show on Thursday, September 5 at Pioneer Park. Greek Fest, Comic Con, and many other downtown events will make parking scarce for the show. So plan to arrive early, carpool, or take public transportation to avoid parking difficulties.
