Empire of the Sun Performs at Twilight Concert Series

Austrailian-based electronic music duo, Empire of the Sun, is a collaboration between Luke Steele (of The Sleepy Jackson) and Nick Littlemore (of Pnau). They first met in 2000 at a bar in Sydney and began working together on assorted projects, including Steele contributing to Pnau's self-titled 2007 album, before debuting their own musical group originally dubbed "Steelmore," that's now known as Empire of the Sun.

Many attribute the name Empire of the Sun to the 1984 novel or Stephen Spielberg movie of the same name, but Littlemore says, "the name comes more from the idea of (and you'll see this in the ongoing videos) the fact that we're traveling around the world going to all the places of empires of the civilization where the sun has been a theme of worship."

Their first album, Walking on a Dream, was released in 2008 and certified double platinum in Australia and gold in United States. It included chart-topping electronic singles like "We Are the People" and "Walking on a Dream". 

Empire of the Sun released their second album, Ice on the Dune, in June 2013 and is now touring it around the world.

As you can see from the photos in this post, Empire of the Sun's performances are more than musical, and their Twilight Concert will be no exception. Expect to see their signature adorned headdresses and metallic body suits as they gyrate across the stage with smoke machines and neon lighting adding to the effect. Though it's unlikely that Littlemore will appear as he's not been touring with the group this summer, Steele won't perform alone. He'll couple the wild costumery, brilliant makeup, and madcap mayhem with a sea of with a synchronized backup dancers moving to the beat. While I typically find myself hanging at the back for Twilight shows, this may be one worth arriving early to and snagging a front row space.
